Week-by-Week Pregnancy Tracking: What to Expect in Each Trimester
A friendly week-by-week and trimester-by-trimester guide to pregnancy — how your baby grows, common symptoms, and the appointments and tests to plan for.
Pregnancy is roughly 40 weeks, grouped into three trimesters — and each one feels different. Knowing what’s typical at each stage helps you feel prepared instead of anxious. Here’s a calm, week-by-week overview.
Every pregnancy is unique. Use this as a general map, and always raise specific concerns with your doctor.
First trimester (weeks 1–12)
This is when the most rapid development happens, even though there’s little to see on the outside.
- Weeks 1–4: Implantation; you may notice a missed period.
- Weeks 5–8: Baby’s heart begins to beat; morning sickness and fatigue are common.
- Weeks 9–12: Major organs are forming. The first scan and early blood tests usually happen around now.
Common symptoms: nausea, tender breasts, tiredness, food aversions.
Second trimester (weeks 13–27)
Often the most comfortable stretch — the “honeymoon trimester.”
- Weeks 13–16: Energy often returns; the bump starts to show.
- Weeks 17–20: You may feel the first kicks. The anomaly (20-week) scan is a key milestone.
- Weeks 21–27: Baby grows quickly and develops a sleep-wake rhythm.
Plan for: the anomaly scan, glucose screening, and starting to think about your birth plan.
Third trimester (weeks 28–40)
The final stretch — appointments get more frequent.
- Weeks 28–32: Baby gains weight rapidly; you may feel more breathless.
- Weeks 33–36: Position checks begin; pack your hospital bag.
- Weeks 37–40: Baby is considered full term. Watch for signs of labour.
Plan for: more frequent check-ups, growth scans, and the Tdap vaccine.
